Meet Selecta YB: The DJ flooding the streets with music

North West London DJ Selecta YB prioritises connecting with people on a genuine level. He is currently working on bridging the tech and music world together through his ventures.

We had a chat with Selecta YB to speak about his vision and how he hopes to change the game as DJ, radio presenter and technician.

How would you describe your role?

I am a radio presenter and DJ, but I would describe my role as someone who scopes the underground scene and provides people with a strong platform. Connecting with people is something I am passionate about across the entertainment and music industry. I would describe myself as someone who likes to bring artists and producers together.

How did you get into DJing?

My family are my main inspiration because my uncle used to host big African hall parties in Ghana, and my dad would give me money to burn CDs in internet cafés. I remember this one time where I spent my rent money on decks and speakers in university. Music is my therapy.

What genres do you enjoy playing the most?

I have been influenced by many genres including, Grime and UKG since they were dominating sounds in my youth. Afrobeats, reggae and dancehall and UK hip-hop are my favourite genres to play overall.

How much music do you have to get through within a week?

Being on the radio means that I can receive over 50 emails a day. Throughout the week, it can be a lot of music.

Is the music world a fast-paced environment?

It is fast-paced and can be overwhelming sometimes. Every other week there is a new artist that’s popping or a new trend. It can be a lot sometimes, but at the same time, it is beautiful to see people invest their time in something positive.

Do you think music is consumed too quickly?

Yes, I believe it is. I do understand it though, that is where the game is at the moment. It has made a lot of people successful in this industry. Ultimately, it is down to the listeners and whether they want to consume the music quickly.

What are your favourite things about being a DJ?

Giving people music and flooding the streets is what I enjoy the most. I love the crowd and the energy in the room. Being a DJ means a lot to me. Receiving exclusive music or being asked about my perspective are valuable additions as well.

What are the less enjoyable things about being a DJ?

When a crowd is not feeling you, it is very disheartening. Whether you are performing at a big setting or house party you want the crowd to feel the music.

How significant was SoundCloud for upcoming DJs?

SoundCloud made me. No one would have known me without that platform. It is probably is the biggest platform for DJs and it allows us to establish ourselves.

Are there any words of wisdom you have for aspiring DJs?

Be confident in what you do, be confident in your craft. Believe in yourself and come with your style. What are you doing that’s different? Who is co-signing your music? Learn to executive produce, build a platform and a brand. You have to keep that hunger going.
